      Granthi Concept (Classical Ayurvedic Understanding)

Granthi refers to a glandular or nodular swelling/encapsulation arising due to vitiation of doshas and dhatus (especially Kapha, Vata combined with Rakta/Mamsa/Meda). 

Garbhashayagata Granthi signifies such growths in or around the uterus. (UTERINE FIBROIDS) 

There isn’t a specific classical Sanskrit sloka exclusively for fibroids, but texts on Granthi, Gulma, Sopha and Yoniroga cover principles used in management.   Sushruta Samhita

(Nidana Sthana – Granthi Nidana)

🔹 Definition of Granthi

वातपित्तकफैर्दुष्टैर्मांसमेदोऽसृगादिभिः ।

वृत्तं स्थिरं च शोफं तु ग्रन्थिमित्यभिधीयते ॥

Meaning:

When vitiated Vata, Pitta, Kapha along with Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Rakta (blood) produce a round, firm swelling, it is called Granthi.

 This description closely matches the pathological nature of uterine fibroid (firm muscular benign tumor).

🔹 Mamsaja Granthi

मांसप्रदुष्टे मांसाभं स्थिरं मन्दं च वेदनम् ।

मांसजं ग्रन्थिमित्याहुः… ॥

Meaning:

When vitiated doshas localize in muscle tissue producing a firm, flesh-like swelling with mild pain, it is called Mamsaja Granthi.

..Fibroid = overgrowth of uterine smooth muscle → hence correlated.

 Charaka Samhita

(Chikitsa Sthana – Granthi & Gulma context)

Though fibroid is not directly named, management principles of Granthi & Gulma are applied. Ashtanga Hridaya

(Uttara Tantra – Yoniroga context)

दोषदुष्टे गर्भाशये ग्रन्थयः सम्भवन्ति हि ।

Meaning (conceptual reference):

When doshas vitiate the uterus, nodular growths may develop. . .. Ayurvedic Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

दोषैः समुत्थितं मांसं वृत्तं स्थिरमनाल्पकम् ।

अल्पवेदनं चिरवृद्धि तदर्बुदमिति स्मृतम् ॥...     Fibroid correlates more with Granthi, not Arbuda...Dalhaṇa Commentary Reference

Dalhaṇa (Nibandha Saṅgraha commentary on Sushruta) explains:

“मांसाभम्” → resembling muscle tissue in texture

“स्थिरम्” → non-mobile or firm consistency

Distinguishes Granthi from inflammatory swelling (Śopha)

Dalhaṇa clarifies that Māṃsaja Granthi arises from:

मांसधातुवृद्धि सह दोष संयोग

Which correlates with smooth muscle hyperplasia.  When Ayurveda Can Continue Safely
