INTAKE (OR) DIETARY GUIDELINES / EATING DISCIPLINE IN AYURVEDA, REFERRED TO AS: AHARA VIDHI VIDHAN (PROPER RULES AND PROCEDURE OF EATING

Mindful Eating is not a modern trend. It is ancient wisdom presented in a modern form.
In Ayurveda, this concept is clearly explained as “Ahara Vidhi Vidhan” (proper rules and discipline of eating).
1. Importance of Food Intake
In Ayurveda, food is considered as medicine.
Shloka:
“आहारसम्भवं वस्तु रोगाश्च आहारसम्भवाः”
— (Charaka Samhita)
Meaning:
The body is formed from food, and diseases also arise due to improper food.
👉 Therefore, how we eat (mindfulness) is a key factor in maintaining health.
2. Mindful Eating = Eating with a Satvik (Pure and Calm) Mind
In Ayurveda, the mental state during eating is very important.
Shloka:
“इष्टान्नं अश्नीयात् नातिद्रुतं नातिविलम्बितम्”
— (Charaka Samhita)
Meaning:
One should eat food that is suitable and pleasing, and
should not eat too fast,
should not eat too slowly,
but should eat in a balanced and proper manner.
👉 This is the same fundamental principle of modern mindful eating.
3. Do Not Eat in Anger, Grief, Fear or Exhaustion
Shloka:
“क्रोधशोकभयक्लान्तः न अश्नीयात्”
— (Ashtanga Hridaya)
Meaning:
One should not eat when affected by anger, sorrow, fear, or tiredness.
👉 Reason:
Digestive fire (Agni) becomes weak
Indigestion and “Ama” (toxins) are formed
👉 This is similar to modern science which says stress eating is harmful.
4. Eating Slowly and Chewing Properly
Shloka:
“नातिद्रुतं अश्नीयात्”
— (Charaka Samhita)
Meaning:
One should not eat too fast.
👉 Reason:
If food is not chewed properly:
digestion becomes weak
acidity, Ama, and obesity may develop
👉 Mindful chewing = better digestion.
5. Focus on Agni (Digestive Fire)
In Ayurveda, digestion is considered the foundation of health.
Shloka:
“अग्निर्देहस्य मूलं”
— (Charaka Samhita)
Meaning:
Agni (digestive fire) is the root of the body’s health.
👉 By mindful eating:
Agni remains balanced
nutrients are absorbed properly
6. Rules of Eating (Ahara Vidhi)
Ayurveda explains 8 important rules for eating:
Eat warm food
Eat slightly unctuous (snigdha) food
Eat in proper quantity
Eat only after previous food is digested
Avoid incompatible food combinations (Viruddha Ahara)
Eat with attention and awareness
Eat calmly without distraction
Eat food suitable to one’s constitution and nature
Shloka:
“उष्णं स्निग्धं मात्रावद् अश्नीयात्…”
— (Charaka Samhita)
7. Behavioural Medicine and Ayurveda
What modern science calls “Behavioural Medicine” is explained in Ayurveda as:
👉 “Achara Rasayana” (code of conduct for rejuvenation)
This includes lifestyle, mental discipline, and food habits.
Shloka:
“आचार रसायनं”
— (Charaka Samhita)
Meaning:
Good conduct, disciplined food habits, and a peaceful mind are all responsible for long life and good health.
Overall Summary
Mindful Eating is fully based on Ayurvedic principles:
✔ Eat slowly
✔ Do not eat during anger or stress
✔ Chew properly
✔ Eat only after digestion
✔ Eat with awareness and calmness
👉 Ayurveda explained these principles thousands of years ago.

CARTILAGINOUS DAMAGES MAY BE SLOW PROCESSED OR ACUTE ON INJURIES ; EITHER BY PATHOLOGICAL PROCESSING. AYURVEDA HAS GOOD REMEDY. BETTER SWITCH ON FOR GOOD FUNCTIONING OF CARTILAGINOUS JOINTS EARLIER.
